Dr. Alexis Promotes Multicultural Representation at the 2019 Women's March
On a homemade “Cards for Humanity” poster, Dr. Alexis and spouse, Alex Honigman, LISCW, encouraged Women’s March participants to reflect on the intersectionality of their cultural identities and share all factors of themselves with their community. During this experiential intervention, marchers were asked to complete the sentence, “I Am…” They were provided a definition of “Intersectionality” and educated about how females and women are underrepresented and misrepresented in film and television.
After two consecutive years of marching in freezing temperatures, the marchers loved the opportunity to engage with mental health experts, expand their multicultural competency, and freely express themselves. There was such a positive response from the community that within an hour the large double-sided poster was filled with people’s handwritten identities and several groups thanked Dr. Alexis and Alex for bringing a welcoming and supportive presence after they had been threatened and ridiculed by opposing protesters. You can find more photos from this community intervention @witandreason on Instagram and Facebook.
A march game for educating people. Taking an intersectional approach to understanding ourselves and our media.
